  • Bookmarklets, Favelets, Snippets

If you’ve used them once you’ll never be able to work without them. Bookmarklets (or Favelets) are tiny Javascript-Snippets, which are stored within a bookmark and add particular functionalities to the browser you’re using. It doesn’t matter whether you browse, bookmark, look up, search, design or program – depending on your interests, bookmarklets can significantly enhance your efficiency and productivity. However, if you take a look around, you’ll find hundreds of sites, which offer favelets of any possible kinds. Indeed, you’ll find thousands of bookmarklets, many of which you aren’t really interested in. What you eventually are interested in, is a hand-picked choice of the most useful snippets you can directly copy and use from one single page.

We’ve chosen some of the most useful bookmarklets, written new ones and listed them below. You’ll find the source, from which a bookmarklet is copied or modified, or a detailed description of the snippets, in the brackets.

To install the bookmarket just drag’n’drop the JavaScript-Code from the link to the toolbar of your browser. To use the bookmarklet select the text on a page or an address of a web-page and click on the bookmarklet. If you don’t select any text or url and click on the snippet, you’ll get a JavaScript window, in which you can input text manually.

If you use many favelets, you might be willing to check out the Blummy Bookmarklet (The Bookmarklet Management Bookmarklet), a free tool for quick access to your favorite web services via your bookmark toolbar.

media-convert also lets you convert all types of files, i.e. video, music, images, docs and archives. It’s also free and supports almost all conceivable file formats. Procedure is pretty much the same; select file, specify output format and let it do the rest. Once it’s done with a file, it will provide you with a link from where it can be downloaded.

  • WP InstantUpgrade Plugin

I came across this post on Weblog Tools Collection. This plugin is a snap to install and it really works!

    Plugin Page:
    http://www.zirona.com/software/wordpress-instant-upgrade

    Description:
The InstantUpgrade plugin provides is a easy and safe way to upgrade your WordPress automatically with a single click (Almost!)
You can upgrade to the latest WordPress version, or you can upgrade to a version of your choice.

    How it Works:
The InstantUpgrade plugin downloads the latest WordPress version from the WordPress server and unpacks it at your server.
In the next step, it deletes all of your old WordPress files (except wp-content/ and wp-config.php and language packs) and puts the new files into your WordPress directory.
At last, it runs the upgrade script contained it the new WordPress version.

    Installation and Usage:
Installation and usage of this plugin requires a bit more work from a user point of view because of various permissions that need to be set.

You download the plugin and upload it in your plugins folder and activate it.

You need to chmod your WordPress base folder, wp-admin and wp-includes and their subdirectores (except wp-config) to 777. You also need to do the same to the work folder in the plugin directory. These permissions would not have to be set if you have phpsuexec or similar installed where your scripts run as your user id.

    Future Plans:
    - plugin’s self upgrade
    - some sort of dry-run mode for the scared
    - support other WP editions (e.g. that of the German WP community)
    - Allow defining files to preserve (even though this is discouraged)
    - if WP officially introduces and maintains incremental upgrades, support them, too
    - Auto take care of the file permissions possibly via FTP

    Review:
Recently, WordPress releases have become rather frequent, with a release almost every month. While several users like me prefer using shell to speed up upgrades, most normal users are stuck with the normal lengthy routine of doing so, which can become quite a pain in the neck if you have several blogs to upgrade.
InstantUpgrade bids a happy farewell to that procedure.

Installing the plugin is easy, but using it requires a bit more work. You have to remember to backup all your files and the database before running the plugin. At this point the plugin will not automate this. You also need to set write permissions before running the plugin and remove them after running (for best security).

One thing I like about the plugin is the ability to upgrade your blog to the latest WordPress version as well as any version that you choose, which means that users running 2.0.x version can also use this plugin.

Only thing I don’t recommend is to do major upgrades using this plugin. When I say major upgrade, I mean something like a jump from 2.0 to 2.1 and 2.1 to 2.2 in about two weeks time.

The reason is that WordPress includes major changes in the core during these version changes. The InstantUpgrade plugin doesn’t disable all your plugins. With major changes, there is a good possibility that many plugins may not work and could really mess up your blog!

However, for minor version changes, this is one of the best solutions we have today to upgrade our WordPress blogs.

  • TagACloud

    TagACloud

    The Idea:

TagACloud is a very unique idea for a website, thus it will take a little explaining to understand all the facets. To take full advantage of the site, you must be the owner or have control over your own website. The idea is to create a tag that represents your website. A tag is a descriptive phrase or a creative tagline describing your site. Once you have added your tag, it gets added to the Tag Cloud. This is where all the fun begins.

    The Goal:

The goal is simple. Become the biggest freakin’ tag on the TagACloud website. The bigger the tag, the more hits it gets. It is that simple.

    How Your Tag Gets Bigger:

Your tag gets bigger every time it levels up! And the only way to get your tag to level up is by accumulating points. Points can be acquired in many different ways, but the two primary ways to acquire points are as follows:

    1. Get Clicked: your tag gets 1 point for every click that your tag receives.
    2. Incoming Hits: your tag gets 2 points for every hit you send to your tag on TagACloud.com. You can get tag specific code via your “Get Tag Code” page.

    How Your Tag Gets Hits

They provide visitors several ways to find your tag:

    1. The Home Page: The home page features 200 random tags in random order.
    2. Popular Tags: If your tag is one of the 200 most popular today, the last 7 days, last month, or of all time; it will be featured in order of popularity on the applicable page.
    3. Keywords: Keywords are essential for any tag that wants to generate hits. Keywords are like user defined categories. They combine the tags that share common keywords. For example, google.com, yahoo.com, and vanillasasquatch.com would all share the keyword, SearchEngine. Each tag can have up to 3 keywords associated with it.
    4. The Randomizer: The title says it all. A user can view a random tag’s website, or view a random keyword.

    Statistics

There are 3 big addictions on the web. Without sharing the top 2, they will let you know #3, is statistics. People love to view the stats on anything and everything. At TagACloud, they will make sure not to disappoint. You will be able to view statistics for every little thing, to ensure that you always know the current state of your tag. You will also find the website itself is littered with stats. Just keep your eyes open.
